Accommodation
New Zealand offers really great choices in backpackers’ accommodation. There are lodges and hostels small and large around the country offering a range of options that will suit nearly everybody. You can choose from dorm-type accommodation (even women-only dorms) right through to self-contained suites, all for very affordable prices.
Backpacker lodges are a fantastic way to meet other travellers, both kiwi and international, meet new friends (or start a romance!) and swap information. Usually run by kiwis, the informal atmosphere of hostels and lodges means that you’ll have far more contact with local people than you would in more traditional accommodation. Most hostels and lodges have shared kitchen and lounge facilities and entertainment areas, while most offer visitor information, some a travel desk and even seasonal job information.
