Activities
New Zealanders love to play - and because they love to play, there’s heaps to do here! We really love the outdoors, so there are outdoor activities available in most parts of the country. You’ll probably want to do as we do, and explore all the things we enjoy.
Typical Kiwi activities include:
- Swimming and scuba/free diving
- Surfing and windsurfing
- Mountain Biking
- Kayak
- Hiking (tramping) and mountaineering
- Caving and potholing
- Bungy jumping
- Rock climbing
- 4WD’ing
- Skydiving
- Hunting and fishing
Visitors also like to go:
- Jetboating
- Ballooning
- Gliding
- Sand surfing
- Whale and Dolphin watching
Although you’ll probably meet Kiwis doing those things too!
And we have lots of things to do indoors as well:
- Museums & Galleries
- Arts and Crafts
- Fine Dining
- Wine tasting
- Night clubs
- Music gigs
Yes, lots to do! The list just keeps getting longer and longer... and we’ve left a lot out... you’ll just have to come and see for yourself!
Check out our regional listings for the North and South Islands to see what’s available in different areas.

Attractions
New Zealand has some amazing flora and fauna - did you know that the kiwi is just one of many unique birds of New Zealand? We also have the world’s only surviving member of a reptile group that lived over 200 million years ago, the tuatara, a lizard like animal that lives for over a hundred years! You can see kiwi, tuatara and other native species at zoos and wildlife parks.
Although this is a young country, we have a strong interest in our cultural history, so you’ll find lots of attractions that date back to the early settlement days, and many attractions that feature Maori culture.
Try panning for gold on the West Coast , or visit Rotorua and see the amazing Whakarewarewa Village where Maori live side-by-side with thermal activity.
You can have an Antarctic experience in Auckland or Christchurch, or find out more about New Zealand farming life all over the country.
Did I mention fun? Well, we have some of the most fun attractions on the planet - and some of the most exciting - after all, we did invent bungy jumping!
