Central Otago
High, remote and beautiful, central Otago is steeped in early New Zealand history. Here Maori lived, despite the intense climate, in pre-European times, and European settlers and gold miners alike learned to live in this harsh but beautiful environment.

The intensity of the light in this region has to be seen to be believed - the unique landscape has been a fertile source of inspiration for photographers, painters and poets.

The Central Otago Rail Trail, used by horse trekkers, mountain bikers and walkers, follows a former railway line up through the region, starting at Middlemarch near Dunedin and ending at Clyde, on the Clutha River. Running through remote towns and open country, the rail trail gives visitors an unforgettable experience and a true sense of the beauty of the Central Otago landscape. There’s plenty of quality accommodation on the way, both on and near the trail. Book well in advance as this trail is becoming increasingly popular.

Travelling by road, you’ll pass through a remote, high landscape with majestic mountain ranges often topped with snow well into the summer months, wide open grassed valleys, the ubiquitous merino sheep grazing in the paddocks and small, rustic towns each with its unique character.

You’ll find Central Otago fascinating - its tiny towns with an old-world feel, outstanding landscape, adventure activities, and warm, friendly locals will make a stay here a highlight of your visit to New Zealand.
