Come Prepared… for Adventure!

There are far more activities than you'd anticipate and New Zealanders are passionate about you trying one or more of them. There is not a more character-building experience than jumping off a perfectly good bridge or out of a perfectly good plane. The rush of adrenalin pushes the endorphins that much better. You'll be high as a kite immediately after and want to do it again straight away ... and then you’ll get a little buzz every time you relive your experience through video or retelling it to friends.

  • Bungy Jumping
  • Skydiving
  • Rock climbing
  • Cave tubing
  • Ski/snowboard
  • Wilderness hiking/mountaineering
  • Whitewater/blackwater rafting… to name just a few of the choices. Visit our Explore NZ section to see what’s available!
Be safe
Backpacking is all about adventure and personal experience, and the last thing you want to have is a bad memory. We want you to explore our country safely and happily, so there are a few things you should be aware of:

Hitchhiking
This is not recommended. Although most of the time you can depend on kiwis to be kind, generous people who enjoy sharing their country with you, your personal safety should always be foremost in your mind. Hitchhiking is a risky way of getting around - there are other ways that might cost you more, but will get you there safely and on time!

Outdoor safety
Anytime you are hiking, climbing, mountaineering or generally exploring in the outdoors, find out about the local conditions. Weather can change dramatically in just a few hours, so you should always carry extra clothing and wet weather gear.

The Department of Conservation has excellent advice for hikers. The New Zealand Meteorological Service website has comprehensive forecast information.

Driving conditions
These vary throughout New Zealand. We have many narrow gravelled country roads. If you’re driving, make sure you know the rules and take care to follow advice and warning signs.
