Eastland is on the far east coast of the North Island. Not only does the sun rise here first in the world, it shines for longer - with the Nelson and Gisborne regions vying for the longest sunshine hours every year.
Gisborne is the largest centre in the region, and is situated on the south-east coast of the district. The area around Gisborne known as Poverty Bay, belies its name, as it is the centre of a very productive agricultural area, with a vigorous wine industry.
From Opotiki, in the southern Bay of Plenty, you can travel around East Cape using the coast road to Gisborne, or drive inland through the scenic Waioeka Gorge.
Truly wild and remote, East Cape is best suited to a long, leisurely exploration. There are many small family camping areas and motels at the villages on the coast, with a seaside flavour that can only be described as “rustic charm”. The district also allows freedom camping.
The road veers inland beyond Cape Runaway, passing through many small rural villages and coastal settlements until it reaches the city of Gisborne.
The majority of rural settlements are predominantly Maori. Everywhere you go, you can see marae with carved meeting houses and the uniquely styled churches of the Ratana Christian faith. In and around the settlements adults and children alike ride horses bareback and in the townships you will often hear people speaking Te Reo (the Maori Language).
Take some time to explore Eastland - a region with a unique flavour.
