Keep New Zealand Beautiful

We know you come to New Zealand to enjoy the beauty of the country, so we hope that you will do your best to preserve it just the way it is. While you’re here, we’d like you to think about ways that you can help keep our country just as beautiful as it has always been.

Ways you can help:

  • Always dispose of your rubbish considerately. There are disposal facilities in all large and smaller centres. Local council visitor information centres will have information about dumps and charges. Most councils allow you to buy a bag for around $1 and dispose of it at a dump for free. There are penalties for improper rubbish disposal - be considerate and don’t get caught with a hefty fine!
  • Always use the correct dumping points for your campervan waste. There are lots of dump stations all round the country that are free to use
  • Please avoid roadside “comfort stops” - use public toilets
  • When visiting parks and beaches, remember to “take only your memories - leave only your footprints”
  • Stay on marked tracks and roads. Going “off the track” kills native plants and animals and can also put you in danger!
  • Coastal beaches are subject to erosion in many places and are home to some very fragile endangered wading bird species. Please keep clear of nesting birds and avoid disturbing the sand dunes
  • Never light a fire outdoors in a restricted fire area. This includes setting off fireworks. If you are in an area that allows fires, please be responsible and make sure you keep the fire under control at all times. Fires on beaches are a particular hazard - they can keep burning for a long time if they are not properly extinguished and may cause terrible injuries. Put out fires with water rather than covering them with sand.
