Learning is also a big part of backpacking. As a backpacker you will really get the chance to experience our diverse culture and to understand other peoples’ way of life. Taking a working holiday or staying on a marae (Maori village), will allow you to learn about the "real" country, not just what the average tourist sees.
Staying at a backpacker hostel allows you to meet the locals who are part of the staff. Unlike other countries, most backpacker hostels are owned and run by New Zealanders.
