Recycling and Sustainability
Recycling
One of the biggest challenges to our environment is the disposal of rubbish. We have a comprehensive recycling programme in place throughout the country. In most places you can recycle plastic, paper, cardboard, glass and both steel and aluminium cans for free. Visitor Centres are run by local councils and will have information on recycling in their district. Some areas even have kerbside recycling bins in public places. Keep an eye out for these “LoveNZ” bins.
Sustainability
Here in New Zealand, we are committed to reducing CO2 emissions that cause global warming.
Emissions from vehicles make up around 40% of New Zealand’s total CO2 emissions.
As a traveller, you will be more likely to create CO2 emissions than most, as you will usually be using petrol-driven transport.
There are a number of ways that you can reduce your emissions:
- Don’t choose a larger car/campervan than you need. Generally, the bigger the vehicle, the higher the emissions
- Don’t choose to small a vehicle either - overloaded vehicles create more emissions
- Where you can, park you car or campervan and walk - walking gives zero emissions and you’ll get to see more and meet more people!
- Instead of using a rental car or campervan, take a bus - using public transport helps cut emissions
- Keep to the speed limit - this helps to reduce emissions and fuel consumption
- Only use air conditioning when you have to in the car
- When in large centres, avoid driving at peak times. This is more fun, anyway, and saves sitting idling in the car for long periods
