Set in the Tongariro National Park, Ruapehu is one of two active volcanoes in the Taupo region. Best known for its winter snow sports, Ruapehu is centered between the magnificent Whanganui National Park, the Tongariro National Park, Lake Taupo and New Zealand’s own “desert “area - the Rangipo desert - scene of some of the most terrifying scenes in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy. The other active volcano, Mt Ngaruahoe ( Mt Doom in “The Return of the King”), rises up to the East of Mt Ruapehu itself, while Mt Tongariro lies to the west.
Ruapehu is the North Island’s snow playground, with people flocking to the Whakapapa and Turoa skifields for the entire season, which usually runs from late June to mid-November, with lots of fun and serious snow events.
The district also offers outstanding hiking, including the world-famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing (November to May only) and the unique Whanganui Journey “Great Walk”, a five-day river journey through untouched native bush by canoe.
Snowy mountains, bush-clad hills, a mighty river and a desert - Ruapehu District is a whole world in miniature.
