Southland
Southland’s sandy beaches, green farmland, meandering rivers and rugged mountains are the setting for innumerable special adventures. Combining all these stunning landscapes into one spectacular journey is the Southern Scenic Route, connecting Milford Sound with New Zealand’s southernmost city of Invercargill, the rugged Catlins coast and Dunedin.

Some of the wildlife to be seen along the way includes dolphins, sea lions, seals and penguins. Together with hidden sea-caves, tumbling waterfalls and an ancient petrified forest, the Southern Scenic Route captures the essence of the deep south.

Southland offers new experiences for travellers, whatever their interests. Multi-day hikers must try the stunning scenery of the Tuatapere Hump Ridge Track, while some of the world’s best brown trout fishing can be experienced on the Mataura River. For mouth-watering cuisine try the locally harvested seafood and farm produce.

Stewart Island, New Zealand’s third-largest island and almost a complete wilderness, has abundant native bird-life including the often-observed kiwi. Explore the various walking tracks, sea-kayak secluded bays, and try the fresh, local seafood on this special, easily-reached island. For more about Stewart Island click here.

Southlanders welcome visitors with warm smiles, sharing their lives, their spirit and their special places. It’s time you discovered Southland, heartland New Zealand at its finest.
