The NZ Immigration Department and Visas

Unless you are coming to New Zealand from a visa-free country and are planning to stay for less than three months (six months for British subjects), you will need a visitor visa (with the exception of Australian visitors, who don’t need a visa). Under a visitor visa, you may not work. You can take a course of study of three months or less.

If you want to stay for longer, there are several different options:

  • Working Holiday: this is a scheme allowing young people to come to New Zealand once for a working holiday. There are several important restrictions
  • Seasonal work permit: in order to get this permit, you must be coming to New Zealand primarily to work. You can, however, extend your permit to cover a holiday at the end of your employment

For full information on visiting New Zealand, and how to apply for permits and visas, visit the Department of Immigration website.
