Wanaka

Surrounded by the natural playground of Mt Aspiring National Park, those looking for outdoor adventures will never run out of things to do in Wanaka.

For those looking for more tranquil activities, Lake Wanaka is within easy reach of dozens of award-winning vineyards, while the selection of restaurants, cafés and shops is excellent. In winter Wanaka is home to four international ski areas with something for everybody; from terrain parks to cross-country, to downhill.

Race your bike down the multitude of single-track mountain bike trails that weave their way through the forests, and manuka-clad hillsides surrounding Wanaka. A map is available to ensure keen bikers discover the best the area has to offer.

Lake Wanaka is renowned as an excellent rock climbing area by climbers from all over the world. There are literally hundreds of routes on sheer rock faces, with the main area being the spectacular Matukituki Valley on the edge of Mount Aspiring National Park. Abseil down waterfalls into a hidden world of bottomless pools and natural water slides and explore deep ravines, carved over hundreds of years by raging mountain rivers.

For the maximum adrenalin rush, nothing beats skydiving, and Lake Wanaka provides one of the most scenic sky diving experiences in New Zealand. Take in the splendor of the Southern Alps, glaciers lakes and rivers, freefalling from up to 15,000 feet before parachuting back down to earth.
