A land of long coastlines, rainforests and glaciers, the West Coast had plenty to offer. Come to the West Coast and enjoy the friendly, laid-back atmosphere enjoyed by the “coasters” for generations. Here you’ll find outstanding adventure opportunities, a wild, untouched landscape and some uniquely West Coast activities.
Travel to the coast via the TranzAlpine railway, winding through the Southern Alps from Christchurch to Greymouth. The coast has a long history, with gold mines, then coal mines established in the 19th century. The coal has been a main source of local income ever since.
Visit Fox and Franz Josef glaciers, grinding their way down through native rainforest to the sea from the Southern Alps. These ever-growing glaciers are the most accessible in the world. You can drive to the foot of both the glaciers, take a scenic flight and even land on Fox Glacier. Guided walks and heli-hikes are also available. Be sure to book ahead if you’re visiting Glacier Country - it’s a very popular destination.
Travelling northwards, you’ll find the famous Punakaiki Rocks, wonderful to explore and photograph. Venturing further, discover the Karamea limestone caves which you can explore by kayak, viewing the magnificent limestone formations, ancient Moa bones and the unique cave fauna. Beyond Karamea is the Heaphy Track, one of New Zealand’s Great Walks.
Don’t miss out on the West Coast - it’s one of the truly iconic Kiwi experiences.
