Travel: Time/Transport Budgeting |
by z_macumbe@hotmail.com [usa]
One of the worst things travelling is not having enough time. The point that time is the currency of the holiday traveller holds true; the more time you have, the more experiences, memories and adventures you will tend to amass. So, if you don't have enough, and when does one ever? Budgeting what you have is the only sensible solution.
Coming to NZ for the first time I found it to be quite accessible. Geographically the size of the country is great for distance times and here more than anywhere else, you have many different transportation resources to choose from. Stepping into all manners of vehicle is cheap and within the budget of even the most cash concious. (3rd-world prices, 1st-world services.) Boats, small airplanes, helicopters are all valid resources for A to B travel. Their hire costs are lower than you'd expect and the accessibility you gain is worthwhile. Mixing these in with conventional transport like; rental cars, trains, buses/coaches and domestic air gives you a wide vista of choices. If you have less time, rely more on a variety of transport, often the cost of a short flight can be justified by the amount of time you save, as well as a reduction in your accommodation costs that you'd ensue over longer travel. (Large discounts on domestic air are available.) If you have more time, the adventure travel bus systems of NZ are legend. The choice of buying your own car is valid as well. On-selling such at the end of a trip is easy if you don't get greedy and stick to the larger urban areas like Auckland and Christchurch.
Your travel budget isn't just dollars, budget your time just as seriously and don't forget to strive for quality time!
